How Mikel Obi Psyched Out Robben To Lose Penalty
Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel on Saturday, May 19, 2012 joined the very elite list of Nigerian players to have lifted the coveted UEFA champions league trophy.
After a grueling 120 minutes of football that could not break the tie, it was down to the scary penalty shootout.Behind saving Arjen Robben’s penalty kick in extra time, Petr Cech continued his superb performance on the night by also saving Ivica Olic’s kick during the shootout.
Not only was Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel instrumental in Chelsea’s ride to glory in the UCL, he also played an essential role in ensuring that former Chelsea team mate Arjen Robben did not find the back of the Chelsea net from his spot kick.
According to the Telegraph, Obi played on the fragile confidence of Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben in the minutes leading to the Dutchman’s miss from the penalty spot in the first half of extra time in Munich.
The former Chelsea winger was followed wherever he went before he took the penalty by the Nigerian who continued to stalk and whisper in his ears.
“I told him he was going to miss it…i went up to him and said it in his ear. I told him Petr [Cech] knew where he was going to kick it so he was going to miss. Petr went the right way. It wasn’t information he had about Robben,”Obi said.
“But I just told Robben, let him know he was going to miss it. It’s just something you try and do from time to time. It’s fair enough”. Obi continued.
Mikel Obi is now the third Nigerian after Kanu Nwankwo and Finidi George to have lifted the biggest trophy in club football.
