Appeal Case Against Baba Suwe Over Illegal Detention Gets October 18 Hearing Date

An appeal Court sitting in Lagos has penned an October 18, 2012 date for the hearing of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) appeal against an earlier ruling which penalized the agency for the unauthorized detention of popular Yoruba actor Babatunde 'Baba Suwe' Omidina.

On November 24, 2011, a Lagos court presided by Justice Yetunde Idowu had mandated the NDLEA to publicly apologise in two national newspapers and also pay N25m as damages to the humour merchant for ‘illegally’ detaining him. The NDLEA is filing for an appeal against the judgment.

The comic act was arrested by the operatives of the NDLEA at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on October 12, 2011 and was subsequently detained for allegedly possessing hard drugs.

Baba Suwe’s detention and the ensuing court case was one of the most followed entertainment stories in 2011.
