RBB Next Rated: Meet Mike Okwoche, fast rising Nigerian TV personalty

Mike Udenyi Okwoche is a rising TV broadcaster in Nigeria. He was born as an only child in Oju in Benue State, central Nigeria. His father, Bishop Gabriel Udenyi Okwoche was the first Bishop from Igedeland; His grandfather, Okwoche Ijoga was among the first to accept and propagate Christianity as brought by Methodist Missionaries to Igedeland. Today the Okwoche family is still quite prominent in upholding Christianity in Igedeland.

Mike started his early school in Otukpo and Gboko where he did his Nursery and Primary schools and rounded off at Ichakobe Primary school in Oju. In 1991, he went to Government College Makurdi with an ambition to becoming an Aeronautic Engineer in future though his mother wanted him to be a Medical Doctor.

In his Senior Secondary school where he was to decide what discipline to work towards, His uncle, Jonah Okwoche went through his past results and realized Mathematics was not his area of knack. His uncle advised him not to go into Sciences and the disappointed Mike had to start taking Art courses.

On graduation from Secondary school in 1997, Mike went to Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo to start a one-year Certificate Course in Public Administration awaiting his admission to a University in the United States but his father died before he could round off the program shattering that dream. He then went to the College of Advanced and Professional Studies in Makurdi taking A-Levels in Government, Economics and Sociology. In January, 2001, he gained admission to study Public Administration at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State. While at the University, Mike was engaged in several social activities. He belonged to a gospel music group called ‘ALL THE WAY’ (ATW). Mike was a vibrant student unionist and engaged in campus politics. He was the first to organize the campus edition of ‘NITE OF A THOUSAND LAUGHS’ (a comedy show) at the University that received sponsorship from Coca-Cola and was branded by Benson and Hedges. All those activities shaped him into being more convivial thereby bringing out the human relations side of him. He had his first radio experience on PEACE FM Maiduguri when he was invited to present ‘REQUEST SHOW’ for few weeks.

Mike taught English Language and Government at Wesley High School Otukpo after leaving the University in 2006.

His exciting experience in the media started proper when he joined JOY FM, Otukpo as a Reporter in July, 2006. He became a Presenter later that year then he produced and presented the first comedy show on JOY FM, ‘ISSUES THAT MATTER’ alongside other radio programs like ‘POLITICAL TRENDS’, “JOY GOSPEL RENDEZVOUS” etc. He left for Benin City to do his one year compulsory National Youth Service Corps in 2007 and was retained at Independent Television and Radio (ITV, Benin City, Edo State) when he rounded off the service in 2008. While in Benin, he was introduced to TV presentation and news casting. He anchored the TV breakfast program, ‘THIS MORNING ON ITV’ interviewing Government officials including Senators, REP members, policy makers, businessmen, Union leaders, Celebrities and other professionals.

Mike has produced several high profile documentaries for local and international agencies; ‘OUR STORY’ on the massive oil spill in the Niger Delta area in Nigeria; ‘IGEDE EVOLUTION’ on the history and origin of the Igede people from Sabongida-Ora in Edo State and the documentary on the Five year anniversary of Children Evangelism Ministry (CEM) in Nigeria are among some of his productions.

All across the country, he receives invitation to give talks at workshops, meetings and seminars on youth entrepreneurship, motivation and career decisions.

He is an associate media partner of Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth (ERA/FoE-Nigeria). He is also the Executive Producer, Maiti-Point Media.

Mike is currently a Senior News Anchor with Continental Broadcasting Services (CBS), owners of TV Continental (TVC) and Radio Continental. He lives in Lagos, Nigeria.
